Best Solar Water Heater:
Save money while cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions.

Installing a solar powered hot water heating system may be the single most cost effective way an individual or family can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, at the same time, reducing monthly utility bills. (For more information, please visit our sister site: www.best-solar-water-heaters.com)

According to Natural Resources Canada (NRC), domestic water heating contributes approximately six million tonnes of CO2 each year to Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions. An average of two tonnes of CO2 emissions will be saved by every new solar water heating system installed.

How do Solar Water Heaters work?

solar-water-heaterOur evacuated tube systems are available in two main types; metal and glass conductors, both contained within the evacuated glass outer tube. Both systems work by absorbing radiant solar energy, which once captured by the inner element, is prevented from escaping due the insulating vacuum between the element and outer tube (in much the same way as a thermos flask, and is analogous to global warming which is the result of heat being trapped by the insulating layer of CO2 which blankets the planet). The insulation properties of the vacuum are so good that while the inside of the glass tube may be 150 deg. C, the outside is cold to the touch, only the tip is hot.

In the case of the glass heat pipe system, a special coating absorbs 92 percent of the incoming solar radiation. A tiny amount of liquid contained within the inner tube vaporizes and carries the heat up into an insulated header tank. There it condenses and returns by convection to the base of the tube, where the cycle continues over again as long as the sun shines.

The copper tube system has a somewhat higher efficiency quotient than the glass due to greater conductivity.

The unit serves as a pre-heater for the main domestic water tank. Cold water is fed from the supply through the solar heater and back into the inlet of the existing hot water system. The pipes are fed through the wall cavities of the house to the main hot water tank pressure. The entire system works by means of the existing system pressure; there is no need for auxiliary pumps or other electrical equipment. In fact the system can work entirely off-grid.

solar-water-heater-roofHow do I know a Solar Water Heater will work on my property?

If you have some unobstructed southerly exposure the unit will work on your property/home. If your property faces south or within 20 degrees either side of south it will work. If the sun hits the unit at all it will work. A minimum of five hours of sun a day would be fine… eight hours or more would be optimum. It works with less time but the pay back time will be longer. While the sun is hitting the unit it is producing 5000 BTU/hour.

What maintenance does the unit need?

Occasionally the unit should be visually inspected to be sure all tubes are in place and there is nothing blocking the sun from hitting the unit. Once a year the tubes should be cleaned to remove any accumulated dust etc. The inside of the water tank is stainless steel.

How does the unit get installed?

The installation price would vary depending on the location of the existing water tank and other individual differences. The tank may be installed on the roof but it could be mounted on the side of a building or even on the ground.

Warranty

The tanks and tubes are guaranteed for five years. Replacement tubes are easy to install and readily available at a very reasonable cost.

How long do I have to wait to get the unit?

Units are usually deliverable within a week in BC.
